Wednesday Evening 2008
Wednesday Evening 2008
Week by Week reports
Final Leader Board
No.1 Wed 21st May
Gary Inwards, with 5 fish and Andrew Green, with 3 fish, hit on a winning formula. They fished two Boobies on a long leader with a fast sinking line. Orange and Cat’s Whisker patterns, using various retrieves, seemed to do the trick. However, the winner on the night was John O’Regan. John arrived late, but was able to capitalise on fish that began rising in sheltered water as the sun set. In the last 30 minutes John took 2 nice fish on a ‘chironomid pupa imitation’.
Roger Eglinton and Frank Daley also got onto the score sheet with a fish each.
No.2 Wed 28th May
with swifts and martens constantly hawking the water.
Despite this, just a few fish were caught on nymphs, with small size 12 Jungle Cock Diawl Bachs being one of the successful patterns. Although some fish were high in the water for much of the evening, Vince King got his winning brace on Green & White Boobies fished on a DI7. John O’Regan put in another consistent performance on the floater, while Gary Inwards found the DI5 and Booby his best method, as did Andrew Green in the last half hour after getting some early fish on a small Booby fished washing-line style on a Midge-tip. Another prolific evening, with the top placed anglers returning anything up to half a dozen fish each.
No.3 Wed 4th June
indicating that fish could well be holding deep.
Vinnie King set the pattern with a fish almost first cast on a Booby off the Causeway, productive from both Nos 4 and 5.
The SW Bay of No 5 between the Towers proved another hot-spot, with Lucian Pop (not in the match) getting several on floating line and buzzers. Andrew Green followed suit, getting one on buzzer and another on Booby, while on the Railway Bank of No 4 Gary Inwards took his brace on a Sunburst Booby.
Frank Daley took top spot from a swim on the West bank of No 5 on Boobies, with Richard Mosek also getting a couple from this area. Even though he moved into Frank’s spot, John O’Regan could only land one fish on a ‘buzzer’, losing his overall lead to Frank, who is now just two points ahead of the chasing pack of Gary, Andrew and John.
No.4 Wed 11th June
but even though this suggested fish might be high in the water, the sinking line was again the most effective tactic on the night.
Top of the leader board, Frank Daley took one fish on the Booby, but lost his second, opening the door to the chasing pack. Gary Inwards took a fish on a Pink Booby from the SW bay of No 5, but couldn’t get another. John O’Regan also landed one fish on a ‘Diawl Bach’ (looked like a Booby to us). Having had an early fish on a Cat’s Whisker Booby & DI5 from halfway down the West bank of No 5, Andrew Green took the heaviest fish in the series so far, a shade under 4lb, on a Peach Booby near the SW culvert. Vinnie King moved into contention with two fish in the last 45 minutes from the railway bank of No 4 on DI7 and Boobies. While John Ferguson persevered on the Causeway to bank a nice silver fish from No 5 on a Sunburst Booby. With 6 points separating the top five places it’s still wide open!
No.5 Wed 18th June
of us made a beeline for the far corner of No 5. Werner had seen a chap get a dozen down here last weekend on buzzers so fished a couple with a foam-head hopper on the point. While Andrew, after no takes to the Booby & DI5, switched to the midge-tip and washing-line. Both he and Werner had fish almost simultaneously to the static fly. Andrew’s went 3-11-0, while Werner’s second went 3-6-0. Fishing into No 4 from the Causeway, Vinnie King returned a couple of fish in the first thirty minutes on the DI5 and Booby, but then couldn’t get another take. While Gary Inwards and Steve Mills both had fish to Booby on the intermediate. Frank Daley, fishing a washing-line into the wind from the Railway Bank, caught 4 or 5 but only kept one. The one he wanted, a three-pounder, flipped off when he tried to drag it over the weed, much to the amusement of Roy Fox.
No.6 Wed 25th June
comfortable. Although in certain sheltered areas moving fish were seen early in the evening, with thinning cloud cover rises became less common until the last half hour when the light started to go. Some early fish were taken in the SW bay of No 5 – one to Andrew Green on Booby and DI5, and a three pounder to Richard Mosek on a Diawl Bach fished on the washing-line. Frank Daley found another in the NW corner of No 4 on the buzzer, but apart from a few missed takes, no-one else added to this tally until late in the evening when Andrew took another small fish on a mini-Booby on midge-tip and washing-line. With two matches to go, Vinnie King is the only angler who could equal Andrew’s score of 47, but there are half a dozen contesting the next two places.
No.7 Wed 2nd July
time the signs looked good. Come six o’clock, though, the breeze died, the clouds thinned and the sun came out to herald another difficult evening. While the occasional fish showed in the intermittent ripple, five out of the six fish weighed in came to sinking line tactics. Frank led the way with a brace on the Booby (returning another three), with Gary Inwards and Andrew Green both using the DI5 to catch one fish each on the Black & Green Booby. After a good session during the week Vinnie King felt confident in challenging Andrew for the overall lead. So confident he put back his second fish (caught on floater and Diawl Bach) in hope of something larger. It wasn’t to be, though, and the next fish he hooked, on a Silver Invicta, came off. While the overall top spot is now settled, four anglers are still in contention for the second and third places. The cash for the Biggest Fish is also up for grabs, although please note entry to the prize pool is now closed.
No.8 Wed 9th July
for the stalwarts wrapped up in wet weather gear. Fish were up in the water and moving to the fly, a good opportunity for Brian Stanton and Henry Demaria to get their names on the score sheet, which both of them duly seized, catching on Diawl Bachs, Booby and dries. Washing-line tactics caught numerous fish, many of which were returned, only to leave certain anglers short of a brace come the end of the evening! Star of the night was John Ferguson with a brace which included a fin-perfect 3-7-0 rainbow. Bigger fish have been caught during the series, including 3-15-0 and 3-11-0 specimens, but John’s was enough to take the Biggest Fish pool. Andrew Green’s 9 points on the night extended his overall lead to 48 points. Frank Daley comfortably secured second, while Gary Inwards took third by one point. That’s it for another well supported Wednesday Evening Series!
