Wednesday Evening 2009

Week by Week reports

Final Results

No.1 Wed 3rd June

Although the word was that fishing had been slow, enough fish

were showing along the Railway bank of No4 to promise some sort of sport, even if they were not really on the feed. Vinnie had a fish first cast halfway along, with Kevin also catching and Tony returning a couple of early fish on floating line and buzzers. Richard also caught in NE corner, with Andrew getting a decent fish from the other side fishing Boobies on the 40+ DI5, and Brian landing one on the Intermediate. Rising fish encouraged some of us to try for them with dries, which brought John Ferguson a fish later on. Phil Smithson was rewarded for being the only one of us to persevere on No5 which, although clear, had seen a big mat of weed pushed across to the SW Bay. Generally, we were impressed with the good average size of fish caught this evening (up to 3-12-0) and their condition. We’re looking forward to some excellent fishing should this cooler weather continue.

No.2 Wed 10th June

Helped by some rain during the day, cooler weather saw fish

caught on a variety of methods. Vinnie had a great start fishing No4 from Causeway, keeping two nice fish from a total of six in the first hour on Boobies. Frank was also getting one or two from the Houses bank of No5 on floating line and buzzers, to be joined later by Tony Fox, who also caught here on buzzers, and Andrew Green who used Boobies as well as buzzers. Back on the Causeway, Kevin and John were getting action on dries, while Phil Smithson found success twitching a floating fry past these moving fish. Richard and Gary also caught, on Boobies, but found they had to swap the colours around to keep the takes coming. Last week’s stocking probably lowered the average size of fish caught this evening, but there’s still the odd decent fish to be had, with talk of four and five pounders being landed during the week. Vinnie’s gone into a three point lead ahead of Tony and Andrew but it’s still early days.

No.3 Wed 17th June

Overcast conditions and a fresh Westerly saw fish not that far

down, even if they weren’t showing themselves as much as might be expected. Kevin and Richard took some of the better fish to dries from No4 on the Causeway, with John unlucky to lose three on the trot on a cul washing-line. Andrew caught his on a small Redhead JC Diawl Bach and the midge-tip from the NW bay of No4, where Werner also bust off on one, while Tony had a nice one to buzzers out of the SW Bay of No5, missing a couple of others. With Vinnie unable to add to his score tonight, Kevin, Tony and Richard are all sharing the lead at present, one point ahead of Andrew, with Frank and Vinnie not far behind. Best fish this evening was around 3-12-0, the kind of rainbows we were catching on the first Wednesday evening. There are still five matches to go, so plenty of time for some real specimens to show themselves.

No.4 Wed 24th June

Fish started to show along the East bank of No4 as a bright

day became more overcast, but they weren’t easy. Werner did well to take one on a Cul Buzzer and another on a Diawl Bach, John had one on a dry, while Richard caught his on a Blob fished on a sink-tip. Gary was one of the few to try No5 and was rewarded by a fish to a White Booby. Elsewhere it was a case of missed chances. Vince lost several fish on the Booby as well as on the Cul, Phil had a fish come off in the weed just as he was about to net it, while a few others reported takes to dries that didn’t stick. Some fish were head-and-tailing, others cruising up and down the edge of the weed mopping up fry. Richard, the only one of us to catch in all four matches, has a seven point lead, but things could all change if this tricky fishing continues.

No.5 Wed 1st July

With water levels on both reservoirs dropping since last week,

the weed banks on No4 were even more extensive, while No5 had kept its green tinge, even if this had lightened slightly. Unlike last Wednesday, we had no cloud cover to dull the unremitting glare so moving fish were scarce. Some of us started on No4 on the Causeway but this was slow, apart from a  knock to Vinnie in the SE corner, and the odd fish topping a long way out. John and Richard both made the move to halfway along the East bank of No5 and were rewarded with fish to floating line and buzzers. In the SW bay Tony had lost one and missed a couple on similar tactics, before landing a reasonable fish in the last half hour, while Frank got his off the Houses bank. Tonight saw the return of previous Wednesday Evening Series winner Bryan Poole, but the man of the moment is Richard Mosek, who extended his lead by 8 points.

No.6 Wed 8th July

A couple of days of rain had improved conditions, with plenty

of fish seen moving on No5. Despite this, Andrew had his fish deep, from the 3rd platform down on the West bank, on floating line and buzzers, returning another 7 fish, including a couple of browns. Having started on the Causeway, Richard moved in next to Andrew but despite breaking off on one fish, blanked for the first time this series. John had his fish on the W bank of No4, next to Lucian who was also catching, while Tony had a couple further down the West bank of No5 which took the booby on the washing-line. Werner also caught on buzzers from the West bank, next to Steve who missed a few takes. Frank went for a couple of the better fish seen moving on No4 with Minkie and Intermediate but lost the ones he hooked. With 40 points apiece Tony Fox has now caught Richard Mosek up, with John Ferguson not far behind. With two matches to go who will be able to improve their position?

No.7 Wed 15th July

Despite a stocking the day before, rain, and overcast skies,

this proved to be one of the hardest evenings we’ve ever had in the Wednesday Series. Small fry were evident in both reservoirs, especially in the SW corner of No4, and if we did see fish move it was generally the type of crashing rise you get from fry-feeders. Mike Heritage (not in the competition) had one on the afternoon and another on the washing-line during the evening, but the rest of us found it difficult even to get takes. Werner had one knock in the SW bay of No5 which, although still suffering from green algae, did have the odd moving fish. The one exception was Gary Inward’s nice brownie which took a cul in No4. Unfortunately, the club decided last year not to count brown trout in our Wednesday and Autumn competitions, in the hope that this would encourage their return, so this fish was ineligible. With one match to go, there are still four in contention, so this series will be going down to the wire.

No.8 Wed 22nd July

Initially promising overcast conditions saw fish moving along

the Causeway in No4. Both Tony and Andrew returned fish, thinking they’d have their pick of better ones later, only to have sport slow as the clouds thinned. Richard in the SW corner was more sensible, keeping one he took on the washing-line, and another that fell to a Blob on a sink-tip. Over in the opposite NE corner Frank had a succession of fish out of a wind-lane, while Gary struggled for a take. The green algae of No5 put most of us off, but not Colin Sutherland (not in the competition) who took a few from the SW bay. John took a nice fish, breaking off on another and returning a brownie, while Kevin landed a fish at the West end of the Causeway. Even when the light went just the odd fish were seen moving with few chances. After eight matches the end result was about as close as it could have been, with Tony taking it just a point ahead of Richard.
