CEFF/Airflo Classic 2010

The bright conditions we’d had for the preceding week changed to overcast skies and a brief rain shower on the morning of the match. This did not encourage many moving fish, though,

so possibly the switch from a South Easterly wind to a South Westerly unsettled them.

Leigh Pond and Kevin Blackwell made good starts from the Causeway and West bank of No.5, with John O’Regan also scoring on the Railway bank of No.4. In contrast, the Houses bank and South West Bay of No 5 seemed relatively quiet.

Tactics seemed to centre around Boobies on the DI5 – adopted by Mike Heritage - or the DI7 - used by Vinnie King - with some of us finding it better to aim our casts along the bank to pick up fish patrolling the margins.

An increase in wind strength during the afternoon made the Causeway of No5 and the Railway bank of No4 a harder proposition, but there were still rainbows taken along here.

Others opted to nymph or washing-line it for the odd fish now moving in the sheltered water by the South West corner of No4.

Overwintered fish showed, including a full-tailed 4-14-0 rainbow to Frank Daley, and a 4-8-0 to Vince Howley. Some of the more recently introduced fish were caught, as you’d expect, but those from the earlier stockings are now a bright silver, go up to 3lbs+ and give a very good account of themselves.

Walthamstow Wanderers did well to prevent a three year run of wins by Hanningfield, who were pushed into third place by the London Irish, with the Wednesdays bringing up the rear.

In the individuals, Kevin Blackwell (not in a team, but likely to be snapped up) was not far behind Mike, with Leigh Pond edging it over John O’Regan for third with the bigger fish.

Everyone’s now looking forward to another good contest in the Wednesday Evening series, which starts on June 2nd, with an East Warwick season ticket up for grabs.
